Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi urged the Central government to award the Bharat Ratna to the late Zubeen Garg, a beloved cultural figure who passed away under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19. During a Zero Hour session in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi honored Garg as a humanitarian and a pioneering musician who inspired the people of Assam during times of insurgency in the 1980s and 1990s. He described Garg as an artist, environmentalist, and a unifying figure who transcended divisions of religion and caste, promoting hope and moral courage. Gogoi also expressed the need for justice, questioning the circumstances of Garg’s death, which the Assam government has classified as a murder, particularly given that it occurred during an event organized by the Government of India. He concluded by reiterating the call for the highest civilian award for Garg.
